My name is Peter. From 1975 the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God has had a Community at Gia Kiem (about 40km from its main house at Tan Bien). At Gia Kiem the Order conducts a village health centre and receives a good number of out-patients every day. Although I was a resident of the Gia Kiem area I did not know that the Order was there. Then some of my friends introduced me to a Brother of the Order of Saint John of God. The day that the Brothers welcomed me to spend time with them finding out about their life and work I accompanied some of them when they went to collect medicinal plants and herbs. In their care and treatment of their patients the Brothers use the techniques of traditional medicine such as acupuncture, press point and herbs. Since joining the Order I too have learned how to treat and serve the patients in the spirit of Saint John of God. He used to say many holy things to his followers but the saying that I like best is this: “If we reflected on the breadth of God's mercy, we would never cease doing good while we were able because, while for his love we give the poor what he himself gives us, he promises to reward us one hundredfold in the joy of heaven. What a happy reward and exchange!”
