8th Meeting of Brothers in Rome

On the afternoon of 26 November, about 90 Brothers from 17 Institutes met at the Generalate of the De La Salle Brothers in Rome. Twelve Superiors General of these Congregations took part. This was the 8th meeting which had been organised by the Tutti Fratelli Group in Rome.  This is a group of Brothers of different Congregations that meets monthly to "Foster our vocation as Religious Brothers and to reflect on our identity and mission in the Church and in the world, as visible signs of the gift of fraternity".

The meeting was introduced by a reflection given by Fr José Cristo Rey García Paredes, CMF, on the "Accomplices of the Spirit. Brothers in Missio Dei". With his customary communicating skill, Fr Cristo Rey animated a reflection on the concept of mission. We may summarise the changed concept of mission to which we are called today, in terms of the following:

- We usually think of "mission" as a feature of the Church; as something that belongs to her and for which she is responsible as the protagonist.

- Mission" is a verb which makes our Tri-Une God the protagonist. It is, above all, "Missio Dei", "Missio Jesu", "Missio Spiritus".

- The Church, the Congregations, our Communities, and each one of us are all co-workers in this Mission of God.

Following the reflection, a meeting was held in small language groups to share the insights and ideas of each Brother in relation to the talk.  These ideas were shared and a number of questions were put to the speaker who brought the reflection to a close, emphasising the changes which we needed to make in order to take up this new way of understanding the mission. Obviously, understood in this way, our mission is not finished with the end of our working life.

We then had a time of prayer in the house chapel, next to the tomb of Saint Jean-Baptiste de La Salle. The day ended with a fraternal supper hosted by the Superior General of the De La Salle Brothers, yet another sign of the fraternal welcome that the De La Salle Brothers always extend to us.

As at our previous meetings, the "Gift of Fraternity" was made manifest in an atmosphere of hospitality, joy and commitment to use our lives as living testimonies to fraternity.
